Scope of Job
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as a Postdoctoral FellowofThe School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research and/or teaching. Performs teaching and/or research work as required within the classroom and/or project assigned.

Description of Duties
Funding for the position has been provided for up to three years. The postdoctoral fellow’s first year will be devoted to the award: Mathematical Modeling of Brain Structure in Neurodegenerative Diseases Exhibiting Prion-Like Spreading. The focus will be building and validating models to study the influence of brain structure in neurodegenerative diseases. During the first year, the candidate will be fully funded through the NSF Award #2316952 (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2316952) and no teaching duties are expected to be performed.

The final two years involve anticipated teaching assignment of 2 courses per semester and scholarly research under the supervision of UTRGV faculty members within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.

The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position:Developing, testing, and analyzing research projects based on application expertise and interest; Aiding in the development of a survey instrument, testing the instrument and disseminating the instrument; Writing narrative summaries of the research results, and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned; Conducting background research; Developing and implementing an evaluation plan and preparing progress reports as needed; Studying, testing, and maintaining accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies; Designing and implementing training activities as required; Publishing in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities assigned; and performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education
Applicants must have Ph.D. that has been conferred within the last six years in Mathematics, Applied/Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or closely related fields from an accredited university, with at least 18 graduate hours in a mathematics content area.

Required Experience
None.

Preferred Experience
Working knowledge of ordinary/partial differential equations, analysis, and probability.
Published articles or preprints in Mathematical Biology/Ecology/Epidemiology/Neuroscience.
Prior research mentoring experience.
Prior interdisciplinary work.

Equipment
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications. Advanced knowledge of both the C++ and Python programming languages.

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other
This is a trainee position subject to a specific time as agreed to by stakeholders. Strong mathematical modelling and analysis/simulation skills as evidenced by publications. Knowledge of one or more programming languages
